This is why we lose players at green
Hey Reader, As tennis coaches, we've all witnessed players like one of my former players Kieran. The challenging transition from Orange to Green courts. It's a crucial stage in a young athlete's development, where foundational skills are put to the test in new, demanding conditions. Let’s explore why this transition can be particularly tough, through Kieran’s journey. Kieran’s Challenge: Stepping Up to Green Kieran had been thriving on the Orange courts, where the ball's lower bounce and the smaller court size suited his developing game. However, moving up to the Green court presented new challenges that initially set him back. 1. The Serve Struggle: The first major hurdle Kieran faced was with his serve. While effective on the smaller Orange court, his serving technique didn’t immediately translate to the Green court. The serve that once felt powerful now lacked efficiency and effectiveness due to the larger court size and the need for greater power and precision. 2. Adapting to Court Dimensions and Ball Bounce: The increased court size and higher bounce of the ball on the Green court proved challenging. Kieran, like many players his age, found himself struggling to cover more ground quickly. The higher bounce also meant he had to adjust his swing to strike the ball effectively from a deeper position, often putting him on the defensive or forcing him into neutral exchanges more frequently. 3. Tactical Adjustments: To succeed on the Green court, Kieran needed to develop a deeper understanding of the game. This meant learning to anticipate where the ball would land and adjusting his position accordingly, which was quite a leap from the relatively predictable play on the Orange courts. Supporting Kieran's Transition: As Kieran's coach, focusing on drills that improved his efficiency hitting from deeper court positions and dealing with higher bounces became crucial. It wasn’t just about physical training but also about boosting his confidence to handle longer rallies and more complex game situations. How Can You Help Your Players?
